The Forest Service has a wide variety of publications available to the public. It is best to contact the ranger district or area of interest to determine what will be most appropriate for your needs.

The Salmon-Challis National Forest provides a Williams Creek Summit Cross-Country Ski Trails Map, and Bighorn Crags Area, free of charge. 

The Salmon-Challis National Forest provides motor vehicle use maps free of charge.  There are five maps total:

Challis/Yankee Fork Ranger District

Leadore Ranger District

Lost River Ranger District

Middle Fork Ranger District

Salmon-Cobalt/North Fork Rnger Districts (back to back on one)

Goespatial Data Discovery - The U.S. Forest Service has configured this open data site to help our partners and the public discover geospatial data published by the Agency.  Use it together with your data to create maps, apps, and other information products.

Purchase maps: Stop by and get you maps today!  Visitor maps for the Salmon-Challis National Forest provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities.  You can get these maps at any of our local Ranger District Offices or in Salmon at the Public Lands Center.  Forest visitor maps can also be purchased online at the USGS or on mobile technology through the Avenza Map Store.  These maps DO NOT show all exhisting Forest Service Roads; for a map that shows up to date road and motorized trail information, see the information on MVUMs here.

To purchase directly from the Forest, you can call or mail us your order with payment.  Payment can be via a personal check or money order to "USDA-FS" for the appropriate amount; or you can use your credit card.

There are two maps needed to cover the Salmon-Challis National Forest; one for the Salmon Forest and one for the Challis Forest.

There are two maps for the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness; a North half and a South half (both from 1984).

There are two Wild & Scenic rivers on the Salmon-Challis and each has its own river map and guide; "The Salmon - A Wild and Scenic River" and the "Middle Fork of the Salmon River - A Wild and Scenic River".  There is also a geology map available for the Middle Fork of the Salmon River (1995).

Motor Vehicle Use Maps

The new Salmon Challis National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) for each Ranger District show the roads and trails that are open for public motorized use. If a route is shown on the MVUM it is designated open for motorized use. If a route is not shown on the MVUM it is NOT designated open for motorized use.
