Libraries in suburban communities are seeing a rise in homelessness, and many staff are unprepared to handle the needs of this population. In this webinar, Mid-Continent (Missouri) Public Library looks at situations that have occurred in their community and steps that they took to train staff in ways to serve the needs of this demographic, from locating social services resources to de-escalation techniques. Staff will discuss easy-to-implement training and techniques for libraries of all sizes. !

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and de-myth at least two stereotypes of homelessness;
  • Create a plan of trainings that could be helpful to your own staff; and
  • Differentiate between the individual’s right to use the library and the public’s right to a safe space.

This opportunity is made possible through the (CALL) grant, in partnership with the (PLA), and is exclusively available to California public libraries. CALL is a collaborative program of the California Library Association and the California State Library, and is supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
