Job Description

THIS POSITION IS OPEN TO ALL APPLICANTS

This position is being recruited in Anchorage and Juneau; the final duty station is based on the location of the selected candidate.

 
  
What You Will Be Doing
The successful candidate will work with school and district personnel across the state as well as with state partners primarily via email, telephone, and teleconferencing. They will assist districts statewide but will prioritize support to rural districts that either lack or that have very limited local school behavioral health support capacity.  
 
This dynamic position will address COVID-19 response and recovery-related behavioral health challenges; provide statewide, regional, and local professional training on school counseling/behavioral health best practices; be available for one-on-one consultations to support the classroom behavioral health needs of staff at district/school request; and will advance the utilization of tele-health statewide with an emphasis on providing distance-delivered individual and multi-district/school professional development on topics like Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports, trauma engaged practices, social-emotional learning, and self-care.  Special attention will be given to delivering PD on strategies/interventions tailored to pandemic conditions (like those that reduce depression and stress).
 
The individual must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups as well as articulating nuance in policies and procedures to stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.  As a member of the team, the incumbent may also be responsible for support and/or coordination of health and safety programs and/or related discretionary grants administered by the Health and Safety Team
 
Teleworking is available for this position, although occasional attendance in person may be required.

This Education Specialist II position will be part of the highly-collaborative Health and Safety Team which operates under the Division of Innovation & Education Excellence. The Working Environment You Can Expect
The position may be located in Juneau or Anchorage, dependent upon the location of the most qualified candidate. Please indicate in the supplemental questions which location you would be willing to have your duty station.

The position is suitable for telework if candidates meet telework qualifications; however, occasional in-person attendance may be required. If candidates are teleworking from a location different than the position’s assigned duty station, they may be personally responsible for the cost of travel to and from the duty station when in-person attendance is required. This position requires occasional in-state travel to attend meetings.
 
There is also a moderate amount of travel to schools and districts. Travel may include small plane, ferry, snow machine, or other alternative forms of transportation
 
 
The successful candidate for this position will possess some or all of the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:
  1. Experience working in or with Alaska rural communities and indigenous populations.  
  2. Experience presenting information, outreach, and on-demand supports in engaging ways to large audiences, small groups, and individuals with a variety of perspectives, from parents to teachers to district personnel to individual school staff in person and virtually.   
  3. Successful experience implementing best practices for school tele-counseling, Positive Behavior Intervention Support and trauma-engaged schooling.     
  4. Experience providing district leadership, principals, and teachers with individual consultations on behavioral health issues with staff or issues they are experiencing with students that arise and offering strategies to respond that can be appropriately implemented by school staff without professional counseling preparation.     
  5. Experience being able to successfully partner with external agencies to deliver coordinated behavioral health services to schools
 
Special Notice: 
Applicants are required to possess, or be eligible for, an Initial, Professional or Master Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of application. Applicants will be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college and four years of professional experience in education, one year of which was as a staff advisor/specialist, administrator, supervisor or consultant in planning, developing and maintaining standards and evaluating educational and vocational curricula or educational programs in a specialized field.

Substitution: Appropriate graduate study may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the non-specialized experience to a maximum of two years.

Special Note:
Due to the duties assigned to a majority of these positions, applicants may be required to possess an Alaska Teacher Certificate at the time of employment and be required to maintain certification as a condition of employment. Specific endorsements may also be required. Documentation is included in the file of affected positions.
