About the Instructor

Dr. Nic Jelinski is a soil scientist and faculty member in the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate at the University of Minnesota; he leads the Jelinski Pedology Group. As pedologists (pedology: the study of the formation, characteristics and distribution of soils), he and his research group study how soils form, why they look the way they do, and how their properties are distributed spatially and with depth. Their research is focused on understanding and quantifying soil variability, the relationships between soils and landscapes, and the responses of soils to land management strategies and environmental change.

Jelinski received an exemplary faculty award (Borealis Night of Excellence Awards) in 2021, and the Soil Scientist of the Year Award (Minnesota Association of Professional Soil Scientists) in 2020. He is a member of the CFANS Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategic Planning Committee. His 2018 TEDxUMN talk—How Soil Unites Us—has been viewed more than 20,000 times.
