Volusia County Summer Camp Scholarship Program

Volusia County's Community Assistance Division has implemented the following recent program changes:

  • NOTICE: A waitlist has been established as of Thursday, May 9, 2024

Due to the high number of applications received on the first day the application was available, the Community Assistance Division has elected to establish a waitlist. At this time, all funds have been committed with over 750 scholarship vouchers distributed. Applicants who are deemed eligible will be placed on the waitlist based on the date a complete application was submitted. The Children and Families Advisory Board has elected to prioritize households with at least one working adult in the household once the waitlist is established. As funds become available due to canceled or revoked vouchers, additional scholarship vouchers will be distributed.

  • NOTICE: Applications are no longer being accepted as of 5 p.m. on Monday, April 29, 2024

Volusia County’s Community Assistance Division closed the application for the 2024 Summer Camp Scholarship Program at 5 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2024. Any applications received prior to 5 p.m. will be processed until all funds have been committed. Once all funds have been committed, eligible applicants will be place on the waitlist.

Scholarships are for children, ages 5 through 14, from income eligible households that reside in Volusia County. Children up to age 17 attending approved special needs camps may be eligible. Scholarships are awarded per child, based on eligibility and will be awarded based on funding availability.

If you have questions about what to submit with your application, call 386-736-5955.

Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email to the email address provided on your application. If you receive a confirmation email, your application was successfully submitted and Community Assistance staff will review your application for eligibility.

Submitted applications take 2-4 weeks to be reviewed for eligibility. Once reviewed, a letter will be sent to the email address and mailing address listed on the application informing you of your status.

Applicants are asked to wait at least 2 weeks before requesting a status update. Decision letters including approval and denial letters are typically sent on Wednesdays each week. To request a status update, call 386-736-5955. You will need to provide the parent's name and phone number submitted on the application to get a status update.

If you received a missing documents letter, that means not all documents required for your application were submitted. The missing documents letter explains what documents are missing and instructions on how to submit the documents. You will be contacted 3 times and if all missing documents are not received within 10 business days of the first contact, your application will be denied so it is important to submit any missing documents timely.

Missing documents may be submitted through the secure upload portal as described in the missing documents letter. Documents can also be dropped off at the Community Assistance offices at 121 W. Rich Ave., DeLand, or 1845 Holsonback Rd., Daytona Beach. Documents can also be dropped off at any Volusia County Library. Documents sent through email will not be accepted.

No, you do not need to register before applying for a scholarship. It is recommended that you register with the summer camp of your choosing from the approved provider list to secure a spot, but it is not required that registration be completed before applying for a scholarship. Registration with the approved provider must be completed before the completed scholarship voucher is returned to Community Assistance.

Registration fees are not covered or reimbursed by the summer camp scholarship.

Summer camp scholarships cover up to $80 a week. If you choose a camp provider with a weekly fee higher than $80, you will be responsible for covering the difference. If you choose a camp provider with a weekly fee of $80 or less, the full amount will be covered. Any additional fees like field trip fees will not be included if they are separate from the weekly fee established.

If you receive an award letter better known as a scholarship voucher, you will need to provide the scholarship voucher to the summer camp of your choosing before the expiration date listed on the letter. The summer camp provider will fill in the necessary information at the bottom of the scholarship voucher and return the voucher to Community Assistance.

Regular attendance is a requirement of the summer camp scholarship program. The summer camp provider will take attendance daily and submit the attendance records to Community Assistance. If your child misses 3 consecutive days in 1 week, the scholarship voucher will not pay for that week, regardless of the reason for the absences. If your child misses 3 consecutive days on 2 occurrences, the scholarship may be cancelled. This is done to ensure that awarded children are fully utilizing their scholarships and allows for children to be pulled from the waitlist.

No, children on the waitlist are not guaranteed a scholarship. The waitlist is prioritized by when the application was completed, which includes when all documents were submitted. The waitlist is also prioritized for households with at least 1 working adult. Community Assistance will be reviewing weekly to see how many children may be pulled from the waitlist due to cancelled vouchers and children dropping out of summer camp.
