Farmers Building Healthy Soils Featured on New Regional Tour

A new self-guided tour is highlighting farmers in southeast Minnesota who are pursuing conservation practices on their operations. The goal is to showcase the benefits of these practices and encourage other farmers to seek out more information.

Four farmers from Rice County (and the Cannon River Watershed) are participating in the tour. They include Twin Oaks Farm (Mike and Kay Peterson), Honken Farms (Dan and Erin Honken), Simple Harvest Farm (Kathy Zeman), and Sommers Farm (Bob and Rich Sommers).

Large signs along the edges of the nine farmers’ fields highlight practices — such as conservation tillage, grazing livestock, and planting cover crops — that they implement to reduce erosion and improve the health of their soil.

Accompanying flyers available at the tour stops and an interactive website provide more detail about each farmer’s experiences. Visitors can connect with local Soil Water and Conservation District offices to learn about available resources and email participating farmers to ask questions about their experiences.

Information about the tour, including the interactive map of the farm locations, can be found at www.soilhealthfarmtour.org and at local Soil Water and Conservation District offices.

The Soil Health Farm Tour is coordinated by Environmental Initiative in partnership with Soil and Water Conservation Districts in Fillmore, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, and Waseca counties and the Cannon River Agricultural Collaborative.

Free Well Testing Kits for Landowners in the Zumbro River Watershed

Private landowners living in the Zumbro River Watershed in southeastern Rice County are eligible to receive free well water testing kits from the Tap-In Safe Drinking Water for SE MN program and the Rice Soil & Water Conservation District.

The “Tap In” initiative was started by SWCDs and counties in southeastern Minnesota and is funded by the Minnesota Department of Health’s Accelerated Implementation Grant Program. Well-testing is also a priority in the Greater Zumbro River Water Management Plan developed by the Watershed Alliance for the Greater Zumbro River.

Know Minnesota’s Nitrogen Fertilizer Restrictions

Updated Minnesota Groundwater Protection Rule Maps Now Available

MDA encourages farmers to review the changes

St. Paul, MN: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) has issued updated maps that will help farmers across the state comply with the Groundwater Protection Rule. The rule restricts fall application of nitrogen fertilizer in areas vulnerable to contamination and it outlines steps to reduce the severity of contamination in areas where nitrate is already elevated in public water supply wells. An updated map of public water supply wells with elevated nitrate levels can be found here on the MDA’s website.

The MDA has also made changes to the Fall Nitrogen Fertilizer Application Restrictions map which is also viewable on the MDA website. The restriction of fall application on these acres will begin September 1, 2022. Farmers are encouraged to check the new maps prior to the fall of 2022 to determine if their fields are subject to these restrictions.

Consider Before Spreading:
Minnesota Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has developed a new tool to help farmers and commercial applicators determine the best time to apply manure. The Minnesota Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast (RRAF) is an interactive map that can be used to determine if conditions for spreading manure are optimal. Weather events like rain and snow melting can cause runoff of manure if it is applied to the ground, which can lead to loss of nutrients for crops and pollution of our waters. Learn more about the Minnesota Runoff Risk Advisory Forecast (RRAF)at the links below.

Native Planting Options: Alternatives to CRP

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is the program most often suggested when a landowner is looking to put land into native grasses or trees. With the future of CRP open enrollment unknown, along with the limited practices available in past signups, alternate options to CRP are increasing in demand.

In Rice County, there are a variety of programs available to landowners for many different conservation objectives. Learn more about them on our blog.

The Minnesota CREP sign up is OPEN! It includes funding for buffer strips, wetland restorations, and wellhead protection areas. Contact our office at 507-332-5408 for details!

The sign up for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program is Open!
