From January through March 2024, four construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed in the district through PennDOT's private-sector partners.

Funding Announced for Major River Crossings in Southwest PA
On January 18, Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis and Secretary Mike Carroll announced $132 million from the Shapiro Administration in new investments for three bridges in the southwestern Pennsylvania region. The additional funding will be used for the McKees Rocks, Fort Duquesne, and West End bridges.
"Pittsburgh's bridges carry thousands of Pennsylvanians and millions of dollars' worth of goods every single day - they're critical to Western Pennsylvania and our economic success. My Administration has a GSD attitude - we're getting stuff done for the people of Pennsylvania - and with the help of state funding, we were able to repair 74 bridges and 7,011 miles of roads across the Commonwealth last year," said Governor Josh Shapiro. "Today, my Administration is continuing to build on that progress by investing $132 million in additional federal and state funding to repair vital bridges across Allegheny County. Pennsylvania's progress has often been tied to our ability to complete major projects that spur economic growth and create real opportunity - and with these new investments my Administration will continue to safely, quickly, and skillfully strengthen Allegheny County's infrastructure."

More From District 11Route 28 Highland Park Bridge Project Hits the Home Stretch
In late December 2023, Route 28 was opened to two lanes of traffic in each direction at the Highland Park Bridge interchange in Sharpsburg and Aspinwall boroughs. Work began in 2020 on this $47.31 million improvement project to address the existing bottleneck and congested traffic flow on Route 28 at the Highland Park Bridge interchange. For years, Route 28 was bottlenecked at the interchange as traffic was reduced to a single-lane in each direction. Route 28 now carries at least two lanes of traffic in both directions between Pittsburgh and Kittanning.
The project also features the reconstruction of ramps at the Highland Park Bridge/Freeport Road interchange, bridge and wall preservation work, roadway widening, sound barrier installation, and miscellaneous operational and safety improvements.
Sign installation, barrier sealing, sound wall work, and minor bridge repairs will continue through early 2024 with off-peak lane restrictions on Route 28.

More From District 11Neville Island Bridge Preservation Project Completed in Allegheny County
The I-79 Neville Island Bridge Preservation Project included a three-coat paint system on 27 spans along mainline I-79 in Neville and Robinson townships and Glenfield Borough, Allegheny County. The preservation work also consisted of structural steel repairs, bearing and joint replacements, deck repairs and overlays, bridge barrier repairs, substructure concrete work, concrete roadway reconstruction, guide rail replacement, drainage improvements, and sign structure preservation work.
Preservation work on this structure, which carries I-79 traffic over the Ohio River, began in August 2020 and finished in November 2023. A future project will address the ramps at bridge.
