I never knew what to do with Alcatraz.

During the dozen years I’ve lived in Northern California, I had never bothered to visit, and hadn’t felt the worse for it. I didn’t understand the appeal. Was it the boat ride? The views of San Francisco? The tour of the prison itself? Like Southern Californians who never go to Disneyland or New Yorkers who shun the Statue of Liberty, I had ignored what’s always been there...  Click here to read the full story

It is always nice when your work is recognized by others and given recognition.

The Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War gave the Friends of Civil War Alcatraz their Patriotic Instructor award for 2011-12 at their annual convention in Los Angeles.

Rachelle Campbell, National Patriotic Instructor said in her remarks that the FOCWA was a leader in the Bay Area of educating the public on the Civil War experience in California. She explained that our Living History Days were an example for others to follow. On behalf of the Boys in Blue the Auxiliary presented us with a check to assist us in accomplishing our mission of education.

Brad Schall, Co-Chairman of the Friends of Civil War Alcatraz accepted the award and thanked the Auxiliary for the support. Brad also invited all members to attend one of Alcatraz Civil War events.

Brad Schall, Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Co Chairman of the Friends of Civil War Alcatraz, celebrated Lincoln’s birthday by laying a wreath on behalf of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Federal Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.  Former Alcatraz Supervising Ranger Ricardo Perez was the Commander of the Honor Guard at the Lincoln Memorial.

The National Park Service, Lincoln’s Birthday Committee, MOLLUS and the Sons of Union Veterans put on this event annually.  President Obama’s representative laid a wreath, members of the Diplomatic Corps, several Congressional delegations, and other heraldry groups placed wreaths in honor of the 16th President.

The event is held on President Lincoln’s birthday each year.  A military honor guard presented the colors, followed by the U.S. Army band, and speeches by the Major of Washington D.C., National Park Service and the Commander-in-Chief of MOLLUS, Keith Harrison.
