Retired Teachers and Educators, Page Pals: SOS Needs You!

The City of Birmingham is seeking retired educators and educators with flexible schedules to provide tutoring services to help 3^rd grade students improve their reading. 

• Retired educators and educators with flexible schedules will provide a minimum of one hour per day for in-school reading instruction/tutoring services with Birmingham City Schools 3^rd grade students between Feb. 21 and March 22, 2024.
• Interested candidates can start applying on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024.
• Retired educators and educators with flexible schedules will be in schools from Feb. 21 – March 22, 2024.  
• Retired educators and educators with flexible schedules will receive a one-time $500 stipend for their services.

Requirements:

• Be a retired educator or an educator with a very flexible schedule, and preferably have an English or Language Arts background.
• Provide a detailed cover letter, expressing your interest to participate in this program.
• Provide a resume, which includes your phone number and email address.  
• Provide copies of credentials, i.e., diploma(s), certifications, etc. to verify educator background.
• Your cover letter, resume and credentials should be addressed to the attention of Cedric Sparks, Sr., the City of Birmingham’s Chief of Staff.
• Your application packet, which should include your cover letter, resume and copies of your credentials, can be hand-delivered to the Department of Youth Services, which is located at 1608 7^th North, Birmingham, AL 35203. You may also email your completed packet to pagepalsteacher@birminghamal.gov. 
• Please do not submit originals of your resume, diploma, etc., as your packets will not be returned. 
• Copies will not be made at the Department of Youth Services. 
• All applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024.
• Successfully pass an interview process and background check.

Page Pals: SOS

Mayor Randall L. Woodfin is committed to the mission of ensuring that all 3^rd grade students in Birmingham read on grade level. With that commitment in mind, the City of Birmingham is launching a citywide call for 200 educators, who are retired or have a very flexible schedule, to participate in a new component of the Page Pals reading intervention program. This initiative is known as Page Pals: SOS, which will consist of four weeks of focused reading tutoring services for 3^rd grade students in Birmingham City Schools.

The City is seeking applications from qualified retired educators and/or educators with very flexible schedules to provide in-school reading tutoring services to Birmingham 3^rd grade students ahead of the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP), which will take place in April 2024. The 200 selected educators will tutor 3^rd grade students in reading over a four-week period. Upon completion of the four-week period, all participating educators will receive a stipend for their commitment to the mission of increasing the literacy rates of our next generation.
