About

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a viral disease. The virus is mostly spread through skin-to-skin contact. A pregnant person can also pass mpox to a fetus.

Mpox isn't a sexually transmitted infection. Anyone who's exposed to mpox can get it — but some groups of Philadelphians are more likely to be exposed. The 2022 outbreak of mpox was found more often in men and transgender people who had sex with men and/or who had multiple partners.
