Magic shows, Medicare presentations, stop motion animation workshops, stamp making classes…for free?
From preschool to professional, Plano Public Library has something for everyone. Not interested in reading? No biggie – PPL is #morethanbooks! See what’s happening this month at the five public libraries near you:
1. Journey through history with dance
(ages 0-100, ticketed)
The Dallas Black Dance Theatre, with classically trained and highly skilled dancers from around the nation, are coming to Parr Library on Saturday, February 8 at 3 pm. Through their “Reminisce” performance, you and your family will take a trip through the civil rights era, fight for change, despair, empowerment and celebration through contemporary modern and Afro-fusion works. Space is limited, so show up by 2:30 pm to get a ticket.
2. Increase literacy with therapy dogs
(grades K-5, ticketed)
During Readers and Waggers, kids in grades K-5 can read their favorite book – either from home or the library – to a Heart of Texas Therapy dog. This series meets monthly through May, with the first session at Schimelpfenig Library on Sunday, February 16 at 2 pm. Space is limited, so show up by 1:30 pm to get a ticket.
3. Learn new vocabulary through sign language
(ages 0-100)
Early learning opportunities are abound at your local library, including Sign Language Storytime. Sign Language is a great way to communicate with very young children, and during this three week series you will listen to stories and get an introduction to sign language (or increase your knowledge!). Sign Language Storytime meets on Thursdays, February 13-27 at 10 am at Harrington Library. Can’t make it? Plano Public Library is offering another session May 4-18 at 11 am at Davis Library.
4. Explore the English language with neighbors
(ages 18+)
The Plano Public Library Small Talk conversational program is for adults who speak English but want to be more confident speakers. Each week, participants discuss practical everyday topics in a casual group setting, have fun, meet people from all over the world and learn about American culture while practicing spoken English. All five library locations offer Small Talk throughout the week through April 24:
- Harrington Library on Mondays at 11:15 am
- Parr Library on Mondays at 1:00 pm
- Haggard Library on Tuesdays at 10:00 am
- Schimelpfenig Library on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm
- Davis Library on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm
- Davis Library on Thursdays at 10:00 am
Children are welcome with parent/caregiver to the Harrington Library sessions – the library offers toys and play for ages 0-5. See the Small Talk page on the library website for additional information.
5. Program robots to beep, boop, turn, make music and glow
(ages 0-100)
Get an introduction to a variety of robots through the World of Robots event at Haggard Library on Saturday, February 29 from 3-4 pm. During this station-based class you’ll build coding skills such as cause and effect, looping and algorithms through collaborative activities. Can’t make it?
