Sustainable Maryland Wednesday Webinar
New SM Action:
Create a Food Forest
Join Lincoln Smith, founder of Forested, on Wednesday, April 14, 2:00 - 3:00pm for an overview of the new SM Action - Create a Food Forest.
Learn how your community can incorporate edible native plants into an existing greenspace for the purpose of maintaining a healthy environment, providing food to local residents and food and habitat to local wildlife.
Food Forests can benefit the community by creating a public space wherein edible food is grown in an existing environment, thus maintaining a greenspace while also providing a new purpose.
Food forests can provide benefits such as:
- providing a local, visible source of food for residents and wildlife
- promoting food security in areas which may be food deserts
- increasing biodiversity and wildlife habitat
- contributing to the management of stormwater runoff and urban heat island effect
- bringing the community together by encouraging volunteers to participate in its maintenance
- Improving human health
