Suspect arrested in theft of band instruments from Plano East Senior High School

Dallas police first took the man into custody on unrelated charges.

Police have arrested a man who is accused of stealing band instruments from Plano East Senior High School.

According to KXAS-TV (NBC5), Demarcus McCarthy, 28, was in the Dallas County Jail on unrelated charges and was arrested by Plano police Friday.

McCarthy was arrested on a charge of property theft over $2,500 and under $30,000, a felony, according to jail records.

He allegedly gained access to the band hall Feb. 13 after telling students he was there to pick up and repair a saxophone and a euphonium, reports state. The saxophone has been recovered.

Police later released a surveillance image of the suspect carrying what appeared to be the instruments inside their cases. He then reportedly left the scene in a red, four-door vehicle.

“The brazenness of a such an act — stealing from our students — is appalling,” Joe Parks, Plano ISD’s executive director for safety and security services, told NBC5 in a statement in February. "We encourage anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to contact the Plano Police Department.”
