Headed for the landfill: Demolition starts at Plano's Collin Creek Mall

Demolition of the old Plano shopping mall will take three or four months.

Wrecking crews have started taking down Plano's Collin Creek Mall.

The 37-year-old shopping center on U.S. Highway 75 is being redeveloped into a $1 billion mixed-use project.

But first, demolition teams have to raze most of the old, two-story shopping mall.

Project developer Mehrdad Moayedi said demolition started this week. "It's taken a long time to get here, but we are underway," Moayedi said.

The teardown of a large section of the mall will take 90 to 120 days, he said. Parts of the old mall will be repurposed as an open-air retail and restaurant center. But other sections of the shopping center — including three of the former department store buildings — will be knocked down as part of the rebuilding project.

The mall, which lagged in recent years with changing shopping habits and newer retail centers popping up, is being replaced with a high-density combination of commercial and residential construction.

Plano's city council approved the plan in April for the 100-acre site that includes new retail and entertainment venues, a luxury hotel, office buildings and more than 2,000 apartments, townhouses and senior living units. There will be almost 9 acres of parks and 1.6 miles of hiking trails.

Developer Centurion American is also considering a Crystal Lagoon water feature that would sit at the heart of the project.

The first phase of the redevelopment will include retail, residential and hotel construction.

In June, Centurion American held a farewell event for the once-popular retail destination that drew hundreds of people.
