The purpose and need of these projects is to address the deteriorated condition of the bridges and bring the structures to a state of good repair.

Project No. 0130-0186, Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 07042

Bridge 07042 is 108-inches in diameter, 150-feet in length and supports I-84 WB over Bullet Hill Brook. The bridge is in serious condition and will be rehabilitated by installing a 90-inch structural pipe liner, repairing the inlet headwall, removing the concrete channel apron at the inlet, replacing the outlet endwall and constructing a concrete fishway. A permanent easement is required for the fishway and will be coordinated with the property owner.

Project No. 0130-0187, Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 07043

Bridge 07043 is a 112-inch by 75-inch pipe arch, 133-feet in length and supports I-84 EB over Bullet Hill Brook. The bridge is in serious condition and will be rehabilitated by installing a 79-inch by 68-inch structural pipe liner, repairing the headwall and endwall, and installing rock weirs. A temporary construction easement is required for grading and will be coordinated with the property owner.

Project No. 0130-0188, Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 07044

Bridge 07044 is 120-inches in diameter, 290-feet in length and supports I-84 over Oliver Brook. The bridge is in serious condition and will be rehabilitated by installing a 108-inch structural pipe liner, repairing the headwall, replacing the endwall, installing a concrete fishway, and rerouting an existing drainage swale. Two (2) permanent easements are required for construction and maintenance of the concrete fishway and will be coordinated with the Town of Southbury.

Project No. 0130-0189, Rehabilitation of Bridge No. 07045

Bridge 07045 is 84-inches in diameter, 323-feet in length and supports I-84 over Sams Brook. The bridge is in poor condition and will be rehabilitated by installing a 66-inch structural pipe liner, replacing the headwall and endwall, removing the concrete channel at the inlet, and clearing the sediment at the outlet.

Project No. 0130-0190, Replacement of Bridge No. 07051

Bridge 07051 is a 112-inch by 75-inch pipe arch, 172-feet in length and supports Route 6/67 over South Branch Bullet Hill Brook. The bridge is in fair condition and will be replaced with a 10-foot by 6-foot precast concrete box culvert. The concrete collar and cradles will be replaced with new headwall, endwall and wingwalls. There is an existing drainage pipe that crosses over the structure that will be relocated during construction. It is anticipated that the bridge replacement will utilize ABC construction staged over two long weekends. At least one lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained, utilizing a crossover for each stage apart from the left turn movement entering the I-84 eastbound on-ramp during stage two. This will require a state route marked detour for passenger vehicles as well as an advance detour for commercial truck traffic.

Access roads, both temporary and permanent, will be constructed to facilitate the rehabilitation and maintenance of Bridge Nos. 07042, 07043, 07044, and 07045. Off-peak lane shifts and shoulder closures are anticipated to allow for construction vehicles to access the sites from mainline Interstate 84; ramp lane shifts and shoulder closures will be utilized to provide construction access off the ramps. Guiderail will be temporarily removed to allow equipment access to the sites during construction.

There are no anticipated utility impacts for the subject projects; utilities in the vicinity of Bridge No. 07051 are expected to be protected and supported in place during construction.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring of 2026 predicated upon the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). Estimated construction costs and anticipated funding for these projects are noted below.
