TGCTA is a manualized group or individual treatment program for trauma-exposed or traumatically bereaved older children and adolescents (ages 12-18) that may be implemented in school, community mental health, clinic, or other service settings. It is a modularized, assessment-driven, flexibly tailored treatment manual and accompanying youth workbook that includes detailed instructions for conducting individual or group sessions. Specific treatment modules (and specific sessions within modules) are selected, prioritized, sequenced, and emphasized based on clients’ specific needs, strengths, circumstances, and informed wishes. The intervention contains a variety of components organized into four modules.

TGCTA has been successfully implemented both as a group and as an individual therapy in schools, residential treatment centers, and clinics in Ohio, throughout the United States, and overseas. In a randomized trial and open trials with traumatized youth from high-risk communities, participation in TGCTA was associated with reductions in symptoms of posttraumatic stress, depression, and maladaptive grief reactions, improvements in academic performance, and reductions in behavioral disorders and disciplinary actions.

Description of Training:

  • The TGCTA training comprises 15 hours of in-person or virtual training with Erica Ogletree, LPCC-S. The TGCTA manual will be used during the training and during implementation.
  • TGCTA’s four modules cover (1) foundational knowledge and skills to enhance posttraumatic emotional, cognitive, and behavioral regulation; (2) group or individual sharing and processing of trauma experiences; (3) group or individual sharing and processing of grief/loss experiences; and (4) resumption of adaptive developmental progression and future orientation. TGCTA is the only current treatment manual that contains an effective grief component that is fully consistent with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013).
  • TGCTA can be flexibly applied, with modules selected based on the needs of your agency and the adolescents selected for this treatment. Both brief and lengthier versions have shown significant improvements in youth symptoms and behavior.

Presenter:  Erica D Ogletree, MA, LPCC-S, CSOTP, CTP-C Certified Trainer, owns and operates a private practice mental health counseling and consultation company, TREEmendous Care LLC Therapeutic Services in Cincinnati OH.  Erica is current doctoral student in the Counselor Education & Supervision program at University of Cincinnati. Erica is also an Adjunct Professor at Xavier University, Cincinnati OH in the Graduate program Counseling department.

Erica has also been trained and implementing TGCTA since 2011, and now has become one of the first official TGCTA certified trainers after receiving training and implementing the model alongside author Dr. Erna Olafson.
