Just in time for the weekend, Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen is introducing legislation that would expand DC’s Recreation Centers’ weekend hours. Currently, the majority of the District’s recreation and community centers are not open on weekends, or at most for a few hours on Saturday morning, denying an important space for District residents of all ages, but especially young people who may have few other places to safely go.

“Much like our libraries, our rec centers can be places where everyone can feel welcome. But, right now, we’re missing important windows when those places are not available – especially to young people,” said Councilmember Allen. “We need to keep the doors open on the weekend and make sure our programming reflects the needs of our residents. I talk with young people all the time that tell me they need their rec centers open to create a safe and active space in the community. Let's put these spaces to work for our city and our young people every day of the week.”

The bill would set minimum operating hours on the weekend, requiring rec centers be open 9 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and 12-5 pm on Sundays. These hours would not limit hours extending beyond those, including DPR’s successful Friday night late night events during the summer. The hours mirror standard hours for most DC Public Library locations.

The bill is co-introduced by Councilmembers Trayon White, Robert White, Lewis George, Nadeau, Parker, Frumin, Gray, McDuffie, and Pinto.
