Mayor Lauds Work of Volta Park Group

The Friends of Volta Park held its annual fundraiser June 4 at the George Town Club. It was a stylish late Saturday afternoon cocktail party, with two special drinks themed to the park, along with ample libations of Champagne, wine and beer. There were also passed hors d’oeuvres and charcuterie and cheeses by Executive Chef Paul Stearman. The party raised more than $53,000 for the park — more than double the group’s goal.
And then, amid the lively cocktail chat, Mayor Muriel Bowser and Ward 2 Council member Brooke Pinto showed up to salute the Friends of Volta Park volunteers for their good work. There is now $700,000 in the 2023 D.C. budget to fix the park’s ball field, Bowser reminded party-goers and admirers in the club’s Garden Room. She complimented Pinto, calling her “one of the two brightest lights on the council.” A reporter maneuvered around the crowd next to the mayor, trying to find out who that other brightest light was.
Among her several Saturday appearances, such as the festive Open Streets on 7th Street NW, this was clearly a fun time for Bowser, also the mother of a young daughter, as she spoke with raffle ticket sellers Emerson Burke, Eloise Garback and Liv Stavish, along with the grownups whose vote by June 21 she is counting on.
The raffle baskets were indeed “amazing,” as advertised — Treat Yourself Basket ($4,000 value), Family Fun Basket ($6,000 value), Sports & Adventure Basket ($6,000 value). Respectively, winners were Elizabeth Reid, Pamela Fleischer and Shannon Taylor.
Volta Park, part of the D.C. Parks & Recreation Department, boasts a swimming pool, playground, rec center, basketball and tennis courts as well as a playing field and is located at 34th Street and Volta Place NW.
Next up for the Friends of Volta Park? They will be working with the city on drainage repair and rehabilitation of the field.
