2006 TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REGARDING THE DEATH OF AN OFF-DUTY
LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY.PLAINTIFF
WAS DRIVING ON THE 91 FREEWAY WITH STOLEN APPLIANCES ON
HIS TRUCK WHEN ONE OF THE HEAVY APPLIANCES, A STOVE, FELL
OFF THE TRUCK AND CAUSED SEVERAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS,
INCLUDING THE ACCIDENT THAT RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF THE
OFF-DUTY LA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY.PLAINTIFF
WAS SUBSEQUENTLY CONVICTED OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER, WHICH
WAS REVERSED ON APPEAL.SUBSEQUENT
APPEALS RESULTED IN PLAINTIFF'S CONVICTION BEING REDUCED
TO INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER, WITH A REDUCED, FOUR-YEAR
SENTENCE, AFTER PLAINTIFF HAD ALREADY SERVED 13 YEARS IN
PRISON.DUE TO A
FAMILY CONNECTION (BY MARRIAGE) TO PLAINTIFFS' COUNSEL,
SUPERVISOR SARMIENTO LEFT THE CLOSED SESSION ROOM EARLY
AND DID NOT VOTE OR OTHERWISE PARTICIPATE IN THE BOARD'S
DELIBERATIONS ON THIS ITEM
