The 17th annual National Friends of Libraries Week, held from Oct. 16-22, was a success as Friends of the Libraries groups all over the country celebrated with special programs, proclamations, membership drives, fundraisers, and more. If your group held National Friends of Libraries Week programs, I encourage you to submit an application for a National Friends of Libraries Week Award - the due date is Dec. 2. And if you missed the free webinar held during the week, Friendraising & Fundraising Ideas for Friends Groups and Libraries of All Sizes, you can access the recording and learn some innovative and fun ideas from Friends across the country.
October also brought an exciting new partnership between United for Libraries and BoardSource - one that brings a wealth of new benefits to personal members of United for Libraries. United for Libraries personal members now have access to BoardSource membership benefits at no additional cost. Check it out for hundreds of topic papers on fundraising, advocacy, recruitment, planning, orientation, and more; one-on-one support from governance experts via the Ask-an-Expert email service; access to the BoardSource Exchange, a collaborative information sharing tool for members, and “Resources & Solutions” emails with downloadable tools, infographics, templates, and more. These resources will no doubt strengthen your board and provide support in facing whatever 2023 brings.
Thank you for all you do for libraries.
Dr. Gordon Baker
2022-2024 United for Libraries President

Book ban efforts in Colorado see little success |
According to Colorado Newsline, “While efforts to ban books in certain genres have increased across the country as of late, Colorado has also seen a few book-ban efforts — but not nearly as many as the rest of the U.S.” Nicolle Davies, assistant commissioner of the Colorado State Library and United for Libraries Board Member, is quoted in the piece: “The two things you really need in a democratic society are free press and public libraries. People need to be able to formulate their own ideas and be able to get good quality information that's accurate, and that's what happens at a public library. When you start to play around with the profile of a collection, you risk not providing an accurate and balanced perspective.”
