Libraries Transform

During , the American Library Association (ALA) and librarians across the country will remind students, parents, and caregivers that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

 

Each September, ALA and libraries around the nation celebrate Library Card Sign-up Month. A library card provides access to technology, multimedia content. and educational programming that transforms lives and strengthens communities. Libraries provide people of all ages the opportunity to pursue their dreams and passions.

 

All libraries can participate and amplify this message using free tools from ALA. They include:

 

• Promotional artwork featuring this year’s Library Card Sign-up Honorary Chair, Marley Dias, the 16-year-old author, executive producer of Netflix’s Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices, and founder of .

 

(PSAs) featuring Phil Morehart, host of American Libraries magazine’s Call Number podcast. These include ready-to-air PSAs for radio stations tagged with the ALA ID lasting 10, 15, 20, and 30 seconds in both the WAV and MP3 formats. They also include customizable PSAs of similar length to which ALA members can add their own ID.

 

in both English and Spanish. Libraries and library lovers are encouraged to share their stories on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the hashtag #LibraryCardSignUpMonth. ALA’s digital graphics are free for all to use on their websites and social media accounts.

In addition, all libraries are encouraged to ask their patrons how their library empowers them or their community. The creator of one randomly selected post will receive a $100 Visa gift card and an ALA Graphics . Additionally, three second-place winners will receive an ALA Graphics The Child Poster.

Bookmarks featuring character from PAW Patrol: The Movie

The wildly popular pups of PAW Patrol are headed to the big screen this month. In the film the crime-fighting dogs go on an epic adventure – and you can too when you visit your local library. Libraries provide access to e-books, audio books, movies, video games, and more that take us on fantastic journeys.

 

To celebrate the film, ALA has teamed up with Ryder and crew to give away thousands of bookmarks libraries can share with their communities. Featuring Chase, Marshall and Skye, the bookmark celebrates the new film and will delight fans of Ryder and everyone’s favorite heroic pups.

 

Fifty libraries will be randomly selected to receive 200-300 bookmarks free of charge shipped to your library. .

ALA invites all library users to nominate their favorite librarians for the prestigious I Love My Librarian Award. The national award recognizes librarians working in public, school, college, community college, or university libraries for their outstanding public service contributions. now through September 27, 2021.

 

ALA member leaders will select ten librarians from thousands of nominations, and each will receive $5,000 in recognition of their outstanding public service. The association will honor award recipients at the I Love My Librarian Award Ceremony on January 22, 2022 at in San Antonio, Texas. Winners also will receive complimentary LibLearnX registration as part of their award packages as well as a $750 travel stipend.

Emergency Broadband Benefit Info Session for Fronline Library Staff: A virtual training to learn how you can help get people connected to affordable internet featuring FCC and USAC Staff and FCC Acting Chair, Jessica Rosenwald

 

More than 550 library professionals signed up for a July webinar and training session ALA supported alongside Heartland Forward. During the session attendees learned how they can empower patrons to participate in the Federal Communications Commission’s Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB) program to access affordable internet. Heartland Forward and ALA share a commitment to closing the digital divide and recognizing the important role libraries play in solving the connectivity crisis. if you missed it live.

 

In April, ALA Past President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr. said of EBB, “The American Library Association and library workers nationwide welcome the creation of the Emergency Broadband Benefit program as one step among many needed to address longstanding barriers to broadband access and use. K-12 school, college and university, and public libraries see first-hand the digital chasms so many students, families, and people of all ages have experienced.”
