In Philadelphia, a major component of improving life outcomes for Black men and boys is changing the narrative to one that lifts them up as assets in society. The Mayor’s Office of Black Male Engagement (OBME) works on several programs and initiatives throughout the year to help address the need for a more positive narrative of Black males in the city.

Spotlight Series

OBME has hosted the Spotlight Series  interview show since 2017. The series strives to identify, celebrate, and amplify the voices of positive Black men in Philadelphia.

We’ve highlighted more than 50 successful Black men (and Women during Women’s History Month) from a variety of professional backgrounds. The people featured work in government, business, education, health care, labor, civic organizations, and nonprofits.

The ultimate goal of this series is to transform the narrative and image of Black men in Philadelphia and beyond. By sharing these stories, OBME aims to show young Black males their own potential, while  deepening the dimensions in which Black men and boys are perceived.

In 2020, for Black History Month, the Spotlight Series took a community-focused approach—engaging a group we’re calling “The Transformers.” The individuals featured are men who have transformed their lives, their community, or the narrative of Black males in Philadelphia. They fall into two categories:

  • Community Believers are Black men in Philadelphia who see the potential in their community and want to build a sense of hope. These men are driven to transform the narrative, build up their family, and support the next generation. They also  recognize the need for change and improvements in their communities.
  • Remodeled Citizens are Black men that have been involved with the criminal justice system but do not want to return, and have transformed their lives. They engage their community, educate youth, and empower those in similar situations. A Remodeled Citizen does not see their past as a barrier, but rather an opportunity to grow, learn, inspire.

Past episodes of the video series can be viewed on the PHL GovTV YouTube channel and the Transformers series can be viewed on OBME’s IGTV channel.

Spotlight Guide

The Spotlight Guide is a tangible resource and companion piece to our Spotlight Series. The Spotlight Guide serves as a tool for the younger generation of Black males. They can access information about and support from Black men who have created an inspiring path for them to follow.

For 2020, the Spotlight Guide increased the number of stories told and the amount of information shared.  We provided insight into our office’s work, featured a list of Black-owned businesses, highlighted young Black entrepreneurs, and supported the work of Black women.
